An Afternoon at the Park was sketched on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University while among the pine trees. The piece focuses on the antics of a particular squirrel that was skittering about that day. The interplay between the Bass Clarinet and Marimba is meant to give a whimsical feel, much like the squirrel running to and fro, causing all sorts of mischief. The slow section depicts a random rain shower that would often pop up in my time in East Texas.
